The Middlesex Travelling Keystone

The Travelling Keystone was introduced to Middlesex by the then Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro Peter Halls-Dickerson, at the Annual Provincial Meeting in 2002. Admitting that he had borrowed the idea from Somerset, the Travelling Keystone was an ideal way of promoting inter-Lodge visiting especially between Lodges meeting at different centres or locations. The Lodge holding the Keystone will form a delegation to take it to another Lodge, by prior arrangement, and present it to the Worshipful Master. It was intended that the Keystone would always be presented at the Annual Provincial Meeting by members of the Lodge currently in possession of it and since that day in 2002, it always has.

The Middlesex Travelling Ark

The success of the Travelling Keystone was not lost on members of the Royal Ark Mariner Degree and in 2008 the Travelling Ark made its first appearance at the Annual Provincial Meeting.  It was commissioned and presented by W Bro Barry Williams, Scribe of High Cross Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners, No 284, to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the consecration of the Lodge.  The Travelling Ark was then presented to the Middlesex Installed Commanders Lodge, which was hosting the Annual Provincial Assembly of Royal Ark Mariners in December 2008, by a delegation of members from High Cross Lodge.  The same principals apply to visiting as in the Travelling Keystone and the Travelling Ark is now always presented at the Annual Provincial Assembly of Royal Ark Mariners.

In 2013 the Provincial Executive reviewed the operation of both the Travelling Keystone and Travelling Ark which resulted in the number of visits being reduced slightly during the year.  At the same time it was agreed that a number of ‘active’ Provincial Officers of the year would also accompany the appropriate Lodge members on their visits. This has led to a considerable increase in the size of the visiting group and to ensure the smooth running of the visit, one of the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies team of ‘Deputies’ will be in attendance.
